Abstract
This case study was designed to investigate the relationship between organizational structure and communication practices, and to provide a subject organization with practical solutions to their communication problems. Following the completion of an International Communication Association (ICA) Communication Audit in the subject organization, audit results were analyzed and problematic areas identified. Several structural components were identified as possible causal variables of communication gaps. Audit results found significant gaps in communication power, communication density, and information flow. Research was explored in several major themes including hierarchical status and communication activity, information flow, superior-subordinate relationships, information acquisition and decision-making, media selection and source identification, information technology, and message creation and delivery. Overall research findings and audit results suggest organizational structure has a tremendous effect on communication practices and effectiveness. This paper argues that this impact can be diminished and/or overcome with the creation and implementation of an established communication strategy and relevant communication resources. Recommendations for the improvement of communication practices within the subject organization complete this case study.
